Fogland Episode 3: House Call on Queasy Street

Mark Capell, an author I learned about through Lindy Moone, has produced a podcast of a story I submitted for his Fogland project.  You can listen to it for free at the Fogland website. It’ll also be available on iTunes.

Ladies: if listening to Mark Capell’s sexy British accent doesn’t do it for you (it did for me), you can download the ebook for 99 cents on Amazon.

Anyway, what else?  Oh yeah, here are the links:

Made it to the next round in the “Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award” contest

abnaI was hesitant to post this on the blog because getting to round 2 has nothing to do with the actual book part of the book.  What you do is pitch the story as if you were pitching it to a publisher. Apparently, out of the 10,000 entrants, they liked mine and 1999 other pitches.  I can’t help but feel bad for the other 8,000 people who didn’t get picked.

Still, it’s pretty cool.

From now until April 14, I can still enjoy that feeling you get when you play the lottery on Monday: like I’m walking around with THE winning ticket.  I still get to dream of all the things I’ll buy with the $50,000 Grand Prize.

Things I can buy with $50,000:

  • 50,000 cheeseburgers off McDonald’s $1 menu.
  • An awesome, tricked-out gaming computer for $5,000, and 45,000 cheeseburgers off McDonald’s $1 menu.
  • A gallon of gas in 2025.
  • I could quit my job and write full time for a year, see how that goes (wife won’t let me).
  • New car? Naa…
  • European vacation?  Definitely, though with a side-trip to Malta for a week.
  • Charity…uh…sure…(whistle).
  • Or instead of the European vacation, a camper for road trips.

Another addition to my Awesome Indie project

lame-novel-ecoverHooray, we have another great discovery to add to the list of awesome indies (left side of blog). Here are the rules of the project if you’re curious: (The Rules).

Dan’s Lame Novel, by Dan C. Rinnert, is anything but “lame.” It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever read, and stupendously creative.  I highly recommend it.  If you buy it, make sure you read the “Dedication” and “Forward” in front, and don’t just skip over it like I almost did.  It’s actually part of the story, in a way, and explains the hilarity to come.

Here’s his website, which is also a hoot: (His Website).

Oh, and a big thanks to Lindy Moone for cluing me in to this talented author.  She also told me about Mark Capell late last year. One wonders who she’ll tell me about next…  Here’s Lindy’s review of Dan’s Lame Novel: (Lindy’s Review).

The Reconstruction Years: The Tragic Aftermath of the War Between the States

ReconYearsWalter Coffey’s latest book looks great, can’t wait to pick it up. His awesome month-by-month account of the Civil War was a great read, too.

I haven’t read his latest book about The Reconstruction (click the cover), but if it’s anything like his Civil War book, it’ll be quality material. I also enjoyed Walter’s Civil War novels.

Full Disclosure: I know this guy, personally. He’s also blogged about me, and one could assume that “I owe him” (and they’d be right).  However, I wouldn’t steer folks wrong publicly like this and risk alienating them.  Sadly, because I know Walter personally, I can’t add him to the list of great Indie Reads over on the left, but if anyone deserves a spot there, he does.

Great Indie Books #3: Cafe Insomniac, by Mark Capell

Please welcome Mark Capell to the “John L. Monk List Of Indie Authors Who Actually Don’t Suck And Who, In Fact, Kick Ass” list. Nobody goes on this list unless they fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Professional, nearly flawless editing.
  2. Memorable, quality writing.
  3. Good story.
  4. They meet a few additional requirements.

“Cafe Insomniac” is a strange, cozy, left turn from reality, somewhat reminiscent of Neil Gaiman, and yet very much its own unique story: timeless, mysterious, and more than a little dangerous. And fun.  I loved it.

Follow the link on the left under “Great Indie Books” to read the blurb and/or buy the book.

How I almost sold out to Big Publishing

cropped-baid-aid.png

About a month ago, I went to publish my book, “Kick,” with one of the Big City Publishing houses, but they asked me to take a dive — to make room for a love story about a zombie and a sparkling vampire and their quest to find a werewolf with a dragon tattoo.

At the time, I agreed to take the chump change they were offering to go publish on Amazon. Sure, I published on Amazon, but I did it MY way…
