A quick thank you to all my reviewers

I come in peace!

The word on the street is it’s not cool for authors to go sending messages to readers on Goodreads and/or Amazon or other online stores. A lot of times, after reading a flattering and/or interesting review, I’ve wanted to reach out but have held back. I’ve wanted to thank readers for reading the book, giving me a chance, picking up the next book, telling their friends, or thank them for whatever it was they wrote in their reviews. However, the last thing I want to do is annoy someone or freak them out by showing up unannounced in their inbox.

But if you’ve come here to see what I have to say, I’m taking the gloves off: thank you all! You rock!

–John

I was wondering why I’ve been enjoying a spike in downloads since yesterday. I’m happy.

Bryan Cohen — great writing

I was a little bit floored by this. I like this guy, listen to his wonderful show (The Sell More Books Show), and I’m happy to say he writes very well. Here’s Cohen reading his first chapter from Ted Saves The World on his new youtube series “Bryan Cohen Showen.”

Mentioned on the TBR Podcast again — and Carol Ervin too!

Ok, so Patrick from the TBR Podcast just read Fool’s Ride and seemed to really like it — spoiler, I know, sorry 🙂  Can’t keep a secret. Another secret I can’t keep is that he’s now reading Dell Zero by Carol Ervin! I think he’s going to love it, because it’s actually quite a page turner (if you have a Kindle, simply spin it around several times for the same effect).

As with all things exciting in my life, I um…arrive at around the 6 minute mark… Carol er…uh…arrives too, a little after me… Just sayin’.

Again, if you like the podcast, maybe pop them a review. The more reviews they get, the better traction they make in the iTunes store. That way everyone…er…um…gets theirs.

I love this book cover by Awesome Indie Harvey Click

I can’t say enough how much I love this book cover, for Harvey Click’s House of Worms.

(Cover art by: http://keithdraws.wordpress.com/)

Indies like Harvey, and the other Awesome Indies, are among the finest authors in publishing today, easily up there with Koontz and Jim Butcher and various other genre authors you find in brick and mortar stores. In fact, I made sure of it before I picked them for my little list 🙂  I’ve read 2 other books by Harvey and both were amazing (The Bad Box and Demon Frenzy). I’m actually planning on buying the paperback copy of House of Worms because of the cover — and if you follow my blog, you know I don’t normally buy paperbacks anymore.

Science Fiction & Fantasy Marketing Podcast

I’d heard about this wonderful podcast from a post on kboards.com, but they weren’t yet on iTunes so I held off listening. Now they’re on iTunes and I’m subscribed for life — this is a great podcast.

Incredible hosts:

One of the things I like about this podcast is they talk about self-publishing, primarily. They’re pretty focused. They go back and forth a lot, really think about the topics, and come up with great insights. For example, I just finished an episode where they talked about price points for various lengths/genres of books. Before that, I listened to an episode that talked about the mistakes they’d made when they first got into self-publishing.

Fun, smart, positive people.

Sunday Word Count. Wait for it…7,000 words.

ralphieOk, so I’m still stuck on 7k. I sure did try, a little. Actually, I got horribly stuck for two days, and then my main writing day — Saturday — was spent “doing stuff” (things other than writing and moping around waiting for inspiration to strike). It turned out “doing stuff” was sort of fun. I watched this amazing thing they play on TV called “football” — sounds like a lot of hooey, doesn’t it? Had a great meal at a friend’s house. I didn’t write another 1k words over there, either.  Still, it’s better to be moving forward and not backward.  I may eventually move backward on the word count, but this week I’m holding fast.

Just to put it all in perspective, I’ve cracked 58k — in total — for the work in progress.  I’ve thrown away maybe 10-11k (I forget exactly).

Libbie Hawker: Curation, and shopping by publisher

http://libbiehawker.com/blog/2014/10/27/publishers-as-curators-not-a-fundamentally-broken-idea

A long article, but full of tasty goodness, Libbie talks about the old days when you could walk into a bookstore and see the Penguin Books all lined up on a shelf and how people would also shop by brand, and not just by author/title/blurb/cover.  (side note, Libbie Hawker hates the word “blurb,” which she talks about in yesterday’s podcast — hah).

Quick taste of the article:

Torrey House Press has the branding-and-curation gig down to an art and a science. Their focus is narrow – that’s smart. They publish fiction and narrative nonfiction that focuses on the land and culture of the Rocky Mountain West, as well as some general, ecology-themed books that aren’t necessarily set in the Rockies.

Torrey House Press has figured out how to identify and zero in on a niche. They have studied their readers – not the book stores they distribute to – and have figured out what those readers want. They provide more of the same, and they’re defensive of their curated brand – they don’t dilute it by throwing in some Kim Kardashian books or OJ pseudo-confessionals, even though those books might sell a lot of copies. They have figured out the ONE thing they’re doing, and they’re committed to doing that ONE thing, and doing it well.

Libbie Hawker in the house: Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast #80

One of my favorite indie authors on my favorite indie-author podcast:

http://rockingselfpublishing.com/episode-80-18-month-retrospective-with-libbie-hawker/

Woot.

*Update: I just finished listening to it, and I don’t think I’ve ever said this before about anyone, but Libbie’s an absolute gas. You’ll love it. Lots of incredible information for those of you interested in writing historical fiction. Also for indie authors interested in succeeding with standalone novels (spoiler: you go hybrid with an Amazon imprint).
