Kick by John L. Monk

How pathetic am I, googling myself at 12:58 a.m. (instead of writing Kick 2)?

Also want to add: how lucky am I to have such amazing reactions to my first book?

Very happy.

That Guy… Who Was in That Thing (2012)

This was an awesome documentary.

soulfire's avatarDynamite Review

that guy who was in that thing

Director:

Ian Roumain

Michael Schwartz

Starring:

Xander Berkeley

Bruce Davison

Craig Fairbrass

Timothy Omundson

Plot:

Documentary about sixteen actors who detail their ups and downs as they struggle to forge careers in Hollywood. They’ve played cops, lawyers, bosses, best friends, psychopaths, politicians and everything in between. Now you’ll know who they are.

Review:

This was a great documentary. So much information and I enjoyed figuring out where I’d seen everyone. I also noticed a parallel between character actors and mid-list authors. A lot of the time they have to work part time jobs while pursuing their passions.

Timothy Omundson looks younger with a beard somehow and super sexy.

Everyone’s in Star Trek.

4/5

Reading “Write. Publish. Repeat.” now

I’m finally reading “Write. Publish. Repeat.”

It’s a book by the makers of the Self-publishing Podcast, and it’s pretty darn good so far (about 1/2 the way through). I can already tell it’s worth the purchase price of $5.99, and potentially worth much, much more in terms of my success as an indie author.  What’s funny (sort of) is that these guys are too successful to qualify for the “Awesome Indies” list.

But it doesn’t stop me from saying good job, now does it?

Another addition to my Awesome Indie project

lame-novel-ecoverHooray, we have another great discovery to add to the list of awesome indies (left side of blog). Here are the rules of the project if you’re curious: (The Rules).

Dan’s Lame Novel, by Dan C. Rinnert, is anything but “lame.” It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever read, and stupendously creative.  I highly recommend it.  If you buy it, make sure you read the “Dedication” and “Forward” in front, and don’t just skip over it like I almost did.  It’s actually part of the story, in a way, and explains the hilarity to come.

Here’s his website, which is also a hoot: (His Website).

Oh, and a big thanks to Lindy Moone for cluing me in to this talented author.  She also told me about Mark Capell late last year. One wonders who she’ll tell me about next…  Here’s Lindy’s review of Dan’s Lame Novel: (Lindy’s Review).

Greek Fire and Other Burning Tales

I thought this was an interesting way to review an anthology, though it probably isn’t “unusual.”
Disclaimer: I’m neither endorsing nor outdorsing this 35 page collection of flash fiction. I’m simply highlighting an interesting review 🙂

Greek Fire and Other Burning Tales By: Dennis B. Boyer

Plot:

As each one is struck, a new, burning tale is ignited.

Although these seven very-short stories, or works of “flash fiction”, are quick to extinguish, they are still highly incendiary— and quite capable of scorching.

A military commander considers the incredible claims of his enemy. Today is the day they’ve promised to unleash their doomsday weapon and rain fire from the sky.

A firefighter pulls an orphan out of a building consumed by flames. She alone has been spared among the tragic loss of young life. But there is something strange about this emotionally distant girl who refuses to speak…

When his two adult sons find nothing but a pile of ashes upon their elderly father’s favorite recliner, they are forced to consider the strange events of Christmas Eve. One is convinced that this is a rare case of…

Just received my best critical review yet

By critical review, I mean he didn’t overwhelmingly love the book. And yes, I want everyone to give me 5 stars and send me checks for $100 with every download, but there’s a part of me that wants to know where the bottom is (so to speak). In Daniel’s review, he discusses the parts of Kick that he liked and the parts he was disappointed with. And overall, I agreed with him.  He’s also agreed to read the sequel (whenever that happens).

Another thing I like about this review, as well as the reviewer personally, is that he expresses his lack of enthusiasm with indie publishing, and that he found my book to be more enjoyable than many traditionally published books. I call that a win.

Here’s the review, which I’m linking to with his permission:

Bonus material:

I was intrigued enough by Daniel’s reviews that I followed him like a stalker to his website (http://www.thewayofslowtravel.com/).  If you enjoyed his review, maybe pop over there and see what else he has to say? (disclaimer: he didn’t ask me to plug his site, I just felt like it).

The thing I love most about being published is…

Every day brings new surprises. Occasionally, readers contact me and tell me how much they liked the book, and these are my favorite surprises. Sometimes I get reviews on Goodreads.  Sometimes on Amazon.com.  Today, I went to Amazon.co.uk for no other reason than to see Kick selling in pounds-sterling (answer: £ 1.91).  But what I found there was just the tip of the iceberg: 3 reviews I didn’t know about, each 5 stars.  They’d come in over the last couple of days, following my free promotion.  It’s the neatest thing in the world to see people in another country reading and enjoying my writing.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll be Big in Japan?
