Cold Comfort, by Carol Ervin — Now available on Kindle

If you haven’t read “Girl on the Mountain”, you’re missing out. I totally just got the follow-up (which stands on its own), and that makes me a little bit happier than most people.  This will cause people to like me more when they see me walking down the hall at work, which will lead to favorable attitudes towards me and eventually pay raises, bonuses, comp days and other great things.

Yay!

Cold Comfort published on Kindle.

Happiest boy in the world alert

So the last 7 days have been sort of great.  Quick breakdown:

  1. I have my first ever author interview coming out this week (I’ll post a link to it that day)
  2. I have a brand new cover, which I’ve already gushed about.
  3. Over the weekend an Amazon Top 500, Vine Voice, Hall of Fame reviewer gave me 5 stars and tweeted/google+/facebooked/blogged my book.
  4. Last week, another Vine Voice reviewer positively reviewed me with 4 stars and will be blogging about me late October.
  5. My latest novel is going through its first round of beta reading.

So, it’s official: I’m now the happiest boy in the world.

Double Lovin’

Sometimes when I read something I’m working on and the doubt creeps in, I watch stuff like this and wonder what I was worrying about 🙂

At one time, people thought this was the height of art in Western civilization…or something.

Escape from Berlin: When Freedom Mattered More Than Life Itself

Sometimes it’s important to remember that many of the best stories aren’t fiction:

The Cast of My Novel!

Carol Ervin’s post, below, is wonderful.  I actually read her book and loved it (disclaimer: she also read my book and reviewed it on Goodreads).

The cast of characters she lays out here are absolutely perfect.  Very clever post.

Have a look:

The new book cover is in!

I like it.  The other one was nice, but I worked on this one with the designer, the wonderful Damonza. It’s percolating over on Amazon now, no idea when it’ll go live.  Move your eyes a few inches to the right, there’s Dan, peeking at you.

Cheers

*update*

As of 1:06pm EST, the cover is on the sales page but isn’t showing up in the “look inside” feature, and doesn’t arrive with the purchase.  I’ll add another update once it’s fixed.

** another update **

Ok, supposedly if you buy a book you’ve bought before, you see the old cover…or something.  ie., people ‘should’ be getting the new cover.  Apparently, the new cover might not appear in the look inside feature for a week.

eBook marketting on a budget: virtual video trailer for Kick

Due to budgeting constraints and vertical-scaling distributional positioning, I’ve had to nix my plans for an HD-quality, 3D video (with bonus footage) for my book, Kick.  It was going to be great. It was going to run on all the major networks in a couple of key spots.  When I found out my budget got slashed, I decided to put it on YouTube.  When it got slashed again, I decided to just have the word “Kick!” in a JPG file and post links to it at the end of various news stories on the web and then act like, “What’s this weird JPG?  Wonder if it’s for that book by John L. Monk…”  When the budget got slashed again I figured, whatever, I’ll write what it would have looked like and then post it on WordPress.

Before my WordPress budget gets slashed, here it is:

…weird, glowing mist billows in from the corners of the screen, like smoke from a dragon trapped in a chimney of a house that’s burning in the hottest, smoggiest regions of hell…

…an enormous robotic tarantula crawls in from the distance, pursued by a menacing, green, humanoid monster with huge muscles and purple pants…

…from out of the sky, a muscular, golden-haired barbarian god with a hammer streaks from a portal leading to a strange dimension where ancient legends live and breathe…

…the hulking green monster shoots gamma rays out of its eyes at the tarantula, which leaps through the air onto the barbarian god, who bashes it through the air with his hammer, sending it tumbling end-over-end through the hellish smokey misty glowing light stuff…

…the green monster yells, “Thank you for killing that robot tarantula!”

…the barbarian god yells back, “You’re welcome.  You should buy that book Kick!”

…the green monster yells, “I’m reading this other thing right now, but I can after that!”

…the barbarian nods and soars back to that strange dimension from whence he cameth…

…the scene shoots back to the green monster man, but somehow he isn’t there anymore…there’s just this human guy with ripped up clothes…nobody knows why…

…hellish, misty, smokey mist wooshes in from the sides again, covering everything in a fog that burns like an ancient dragon’s smokey breath…

…or does it?!

Camping this weekend in the forests of West Virginia

As I descend this weekend into the heart of darkness, it occurs to me that I might not return.  Poachers, bandits and wild animals.  Quicksand and avalanches.  Lost tribes.  Anything can happen.  So, if you don’t hear from me in a few days, please light a candle for me and say a prayer for world peace.

Have my cake and tweet it too

cakeI’m not responsible for the damage done to this cake.  I’m taking a picture of it because I can’t eat it.  Sorta like photographing wildlife instead of hunting.

Updates…

I love elipseseseses.  They always make things seem more interesting.  Except when used…to…excess…(…).

Some updates:

1) For anyone who followed and read my Carbivorous Rex post over on dot2trot,  you’ll be happy to know I walked past an absolutely delicious-looking cake from a party someone threw.  Normally I’d load up 2 pieces on a plate and shoot back to my desk, then grab my coffee cup and go fill up and grab another piece and bring that back with me.  Today?  Nada.  Didn’t even feel the urge.  The weirdest thing? I miss the urge.

2) Just heard back from my ecover designer.  He said he’d have 2 options available today sometime.  I expect 3d holographic projections and special inks that glow in the dark.  I’ll let you know…

3) I’ve just finished a major mark-up of my latest work in progress–a book about a thief.  Working title: Thief’s Odyssey. I hope to get the edits in today, but it’ll probably take 2-3 days since “Life Happens” when you get home.
