Great episode: Kev & Steve’s Indie Publishing Adventure w. Harry Dewulf

I first heard Harry Dewulf on the Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast, episode #12. I thought he was amazing. On the RSP, he mainly talked about how he approaches editing, how writers should go about hiring an editor, etc.  Here he talks to Kev & Steve about the mistakes he found in the early chapters of their self-published book.  It’s sort of funny how he dishes it out — lots of self-deprecating jokes from the hosts over various mistakes they’d made, quite informative and fun. Harry ends the podcast talking about his editing services, the different tiers, etc.  A worthy episode in this up-and-coming indie publishing podcast.

Sharing virtual real estate with Libbie Hawker today

So “Kick” is up on Kobo today, on the front page of their “New Free Titles” section. It’s a lucky location. But it has an even cooler twist. An author friend of mine, Libbie Hawker, is sitting right beside me today, at least for a little while. The way titles move around, we’re sure to be scattered apart soon, so I snagged a screen shot.  Her book is “The Sekhmet Bed,” writing as L.M. Ironside.

Sunday Word Count: 8000

ralphieSomehow I hit 8k this week. I had ups, I had downs, then the internet went way down for three days, and a light appeared at the end of the tunnel — I couldn’t check Facebook!  I couldn’t watch cute cat videos!  Suddenly I had no reason to miss my 7k word count goal for the week.

Actually, in retrospect, I should have hit a higher number. I mean, even our television channels weren’t working. We were like our prehistoric ancestors who had to talk to each other and play board games.

The horror…the horror. I hear the drums…they are coming.

Simon Whistler reads my guest post

The legendary Simon Whistler reads my post on writer’s block — enjoy!

Incidentally, Simon’s also published his own book: Audiobooks for Indies.  Lots of great reviews!

** Note: Simon has a bunch of other great guest posts as well (not to mention the RSP itself, of course) **

Interview: Hugh Howey

I mentioned this guy’s site the other day. Would you believe he landed a Hugh Howey interview? Totally did. Here it is!

Sloane Howell's avatarWILL MARCK

howey, hugh

It was early afternoon last Friday at the office.  I was waiting for information from about four different people (I needed it to continue on a project) that I was sure would arrive later around 4 p.m. as they all left for the weekend.  Then, I’d have the pleasure of staying late and working into the evening.  In my bored state I thought, why not throw up a Hail Mary and see what Hugh Howey is up to, maybe he’ll answer some questions for my readers.  Much to my surprise, I had a response within about two hours that said he’d be delighted and for me to send my questions on over.  I was completely unproductive the rest of the day–doing multiple river dances and whatnot in utter elation–so if I’m jobless before the Thanksgiving holiday I may have to hit him up for a loan.

If you’re unfamiliar with…

Russell Blake weighs in on the state of indie publishing

Yesterday, I posted a link to an article by Smashwords creator Mark Coker (scroll down a little). In it, he talks about how sales are down for indies, and partially dings Kindle Unlimited for that. Now Russell Blake weighs in, though he doesn’t appear to be “replying” to Coker’s article. Perhaps great minds think alike?  I should write something like that and up my greatness!

But you know…whatever.  Here’s the link:

Three and a Half Years

Money Quote:

So what’s an author to do? My strategy is to continue writing books I’d want to read, and hope that my readership grows over time, and feels that my stories and prose are a fair value at their $5 or so price point.

One of my favorite indie-publishing posts by Russell is his “Author Myths” series. If you want a little more curated Blake to sift, have a look at these:

Sunday Word Count: 7000

ralphieStill choo-chooing along. I actually got closer to 7500, but didn’t want to round up. Waiting for that special moment when it happens and I sense the ending of the first draft. I’ve heard other writers say that’s when their word counts go nuts, and it’s been my experience as well. I’m “writing messy” as Rachael Herron puts it — just getting the story down and never mind how pretty it is. Now I have authors notes scattered everywhere and my spellchecker won’t talk to me.
