Guest Post: Editing — Why Do I Bother?

This is ossum!

Do you ever ask yourself, “Why are so many traditionally published books woefully under-edited?”

Sci-fi and fantasy author Michael Drakich does, too.

Editing – Why Do I Bother?

author Michael Drakich

Lately, in my recreational reading, I have been finding a greater number of the novels I read as being poorly edited. I understand that, by being engaged as an author, my perspective has skewed from the days prior to my entering the industry as I now examine what I read in a different manner. Still, I cannot help but believe the need for crisp editing has gone out the window. Before I go further, I need to clarify something. I’m not talking about self-published works. I’m referring to novels being produced by the big publishing houses.
Call me old-fashioned, but I still have a penchant for buying print copy books instead of reading eBooks, and I tend to make my purchases…

Permafree — Fogland: House Call on Queasy Street

A minor miracle: Amazon now has “Queasy Street” up for free.  This should help me reach readers who would like to sample my writing before paying full price for “Kick”.

It’s ranked #6 in the free store in one of the categories 🙂

What a great morning

I just found out my humorous short story “He Will Lead Us” was published in an anthology with David Gerrold.  The David Gerrold.  The guy who wrote Star Trek’s famous episode “Trouble With Tribbles”.  The guy who wrote the “War Against the Chtorr” series.  The guy who wrote the most amazing psychological suspense/sci-fi story ever: “Starhunt”.  And now he’s the guy who’s in the same frickin’ anthology as me.

I’m feeling verklempt.

‘KICK’ back and relax in my fabulous interview session with John L. Monk!

My name is John L. Monk, and I’ve been interviewed by Logan Keys. It’s actually sort of a cool interview, she posted all these funny pictures in it. I mean, unless you don’t like funny pictures…

“Right now “Kick” has 65 reviews on Amazon, and a 4.7 star rating out of 5. When I first published, I’d hoped people would like the book, but I never expected the reaction I’ve gotten. I had a top 500 Hall of Fame Vine Voice reviewer say it was “one of the more entertaining and unique books” he’d read that year. Another Vine Voice reviewer also gave me a great review, and multiple reviewers made statements requesting a sequel. Over on Goodreads, I have a 4.3 rating (43 ratings/16 reviews), which is pretty good for Goodreads. I’m hugely flattered.”John L. Monk

I know I’ve whetted your appetite for this for far too long! Here it is folks,
John L. Monk rocks the house with our very first Loganesque interview.

*cue music as John enters*

So John, are you as stoked about this interview as I am?

John: Uh huh…

More, please.

Wow, 2 reblogs in one day for me, but this one’s sort of an important one (for lovers of fiction):

Carol Ervin's avatarCarol Ervin, Author of the Mountain Women Series

Though I’m always hesitant to give literary advice, I would like to make a modest request to authors of fiction. Please, give us something that’s more.

A lot of fiction is like stale cookies or mediocre pizza, satisfying to people who’ll take sugar, cheese and pepperoni in any form.  I can never understand why, when it’s not required, some will read a book all the way through, then acknowledge it was terrible. Like, “That pizza was really bad.” Belch. I guess they’re hungry.

People read fiction to have an experience–thrilling or horrifying or romantic, and hopefully satisfactory. Guess what, some also read fiction to be enlightened. When I read fiction, I like to learn something.

I’m told more people read non-fiction than fiction. To them, fiction may seem frivolous, unconnected to real life ambitions and concerns.

In truth, the best fiction offers an entertaining experience along with insight, so it’s possible to learn more about ourselves and others, about events, cultures…

Be Your Own Health Hero

Hey, I kind of made 3rd place here! Woo hoo!

Dot2Trot's avatarDot2Trot

hero quote I’m a little late posting this (darn strep throat!). I was contacted by the American Recall Center and asked to write about my health hero — that person in my life that inspires me to lose weight. That was a little tough for me, as I have lots of support from friends and family.

Two Top Contenders
At first, the honor went to my good friend Elizabeth, my biggest cheerleader for the last 2 years. She’s always let me bend her ear about major food failures and workout successes. Also, she’s undergoing her own fitness and health journey, so it was easy to share my goals and concerns with her. She’s also working overtime to get me to do a Disney half marathon with her (need to get that 5K under my belt first). And though she lives on the opposite coast, she’s always ready with much-needed sage…

Promising new Indie Book now available: Regulation 19

I’ve read the sample and was immensely pleased. Kept my attention, seemed professionally formatted and edited.  Looking forward to it after I finish “Write. Publish. Repeat.”

Disclaimer: I kind of know PT now and he’s reviewed my book, so I can’t add him to the Awesome Indies list no matter how awesome he is. Sigh. I’m going to scare off all kinds of new friends with that dang list…

Reading “Write. Publish. Repeat.” now

I’m finally reading “Write. Publish. Repeat.”

It’s a book by the makers of the Self-publishing Podcast, and it’s pretty darn good so far (about 1/2 the way through). I can already tell it’s worth the purchase price of $5.99, and potentially worth much, much more in terms of my success as an indie author.  What’s funny (sort of) is that these guys are too successful to qualify for the “Awesome Indies” list.

But it doesn’t stop me from saying good job, now does it?
