A “Goodbye 2014” post, but not by me

Ok, so I didn’t write my own goodbye 2014 post. I’m like the only guy–but I’m shaking things up!  Breakin’ the rules!  It’s gonna pay off one day, I swear.

Anyway, here’s a nice post by a new indie author I admire, EJ Robinson, talking about what he’s learned this year:

“…along the way I discovered a curious thing: there is a community of authors eager to share this experience and help others along the way.  I’m not talking about the hordes of Twitter who “follow if followed” only to spam your feed until you’re blind with images of nude-covered books of bare-chested vampires.  I’m talking about genuinely good people willing to read, constructively critique and promote your work while taking time away from their own. ”

TBR Podcast update

TBR_PodcastSo last week, I got word that Patrick Stemp of the TBR Podcast had started reading my first book, Kick. I was pretty happy, but also a little nervous. What if he didn’t like fast-paced, edge-of-your seat action with spunky sidekicks quipping cheeky catchphrases?

Waiting to hear what someone thinks of your book is a little like waiting to see if poison gas is about to kill Shrodinger’s Cat: maybe he’ll love it, maybe he’ll hate it. But hurray for me (and the cat) — he liked it!  In fact, the other hosts (Michael La Ronn, Jamie Maltman) now want to read it. There’s a lot of competition on their personal “to be read” lists, with Michael wanting to read Wonderbook by Jeff VanderMeer, and Jamie  wanting to read the Light Bringer series by Brent Weeks (awesome author).

I’ve been listening to this podcast for a few months now. If you like the show, maybe leave a review for them on iTunes?

Enjoying “Kokomo’s: Flagler Beach Fiction Series”

So there’s this writkokomos_flagler_beacher guy named Armand Rosamilia, and he’s got this big fancy podcast thing (showoff), and he wrote this fiction series about Flagler Beach, a place where I once caught an enormous flounder when I was about thirteen years old.

What a great collection of stories. Love the characters, the description, the little insights, and found myself smiling and laughing a few times. Still not done with it, and I consider that a good thing — more joy to come.

Quick example of the quirky writing. In one story, a grumpy sort of grump is watching two young people sitting at a table, a guy and a girl. He observes: “Just a couple of young kids with a full life ahead, thinking they’d met their dream companion, and they’d spend the next fifty years in wedded bliss. Charlie wanted to go out there and punch them both in the face. Knock some sense into them.”  And in case you think that’s some sort of spoiler, you need to read this story to the end.  Beautiful, marvelous perfection. This was from the story “Maybe I Don’t Know.” I’m jealous.

The feel of paper under my fingers, the romance of the written word…

1378342_1425347107686913_1509716899_nMy wife bought me some new things to read for Christmas, and for the first time in about a year and a half, I found myself curling up with an old-fashioned paperback book. Ah, the thrill of the paper under my fingers, the romance of the written word wafting up like printed perfume for the soul, carrying me blissfully from page to page and…

Hmm, where did my bookmark go? Oh, there it is. I’ll just bend over and pick it up from where it… Oh dear, it’s under my seat now. That’s fine. I’ll simply get up, move the chair…

Now, where was I?  I remember: the winsome susurrous of pages leafing through my tired fingers in a murmured conversation between de and light, and…hmm, my eyes aren’t what they used to be. May as well tap the screen and adjust the font size — woops, ha ha, silly me, it’s just a book. Ah, but such a book! A lovingly crafted tribute to ancient times of hand-ground inks and mysterious sigils scrawled on papyrus scrolls. What a joy it must have been to read those things.

Give me the heft of a good tome any day of the week. This is the way literature was meant to be consumed: clutching the floppy thing in one hand while applying just enough pressure on the spine to read without feeling like I’m peeking around a corner at something naughty.

Hmm, what’s that word there? I don’t recognize it, don’t know the meaning of it: f-e-a-r. I’ll just click that little word to find out…

Woops — got me again!  Fool me once and all that. Easy enough, I’ll set the book down, being careful to avoid that tiny drop of coffee I’d spilled so it doesn’t form a giant brown crater across the next 15 pages. Now I’ll rush upstairs to the “bookshelf” where I keep my 8-track tapes and trusty 30 pound dictionary. By the time I’m back in my cushy chair, I’m sweating and tired and in need of a nap.

It’s tough work being American, but someone’s gotta do it.

Sunday Word Count: 7k

ralphieI’m beginning to notice a troubling pattern. I seem to write just up to 7k, sometimes with a few hundred words in change, and then stop. Kind of like I’m only wearing the required fifteen pieces of “flair” like in the movie Office Space. Don’t I wanna be a team player? Am I the kind of person who only does the bare minimum? So my challenge for next week is to get 8k words, at least.

P.T. Hylton states his writing goals

Quick reminder: if you can only purchase 1 free book before the year ends, don’t download my dumb book, pick up Dell Zero by Carol Ervin. One of the best dystopian novels I’ve ever read. You’ll be an instant fan.

Now…let’s see…what the heck is P.T. Hylton going on about this time? 500k words in a year?!  Is he kidding? That’s like…hmm….(counting on fingers)…like thousands of words a day!!  Wait, no, that’s only 1400. Ok, I went to public school. Ok, I played hookey. But whatever… I’d be happy with 240k words in a year (about 3 books). I hope PT can do it, but even if he only gets 499,999, that’s still pretty good isn’t it? 🙂

Sinfully awesome movie experience

Our favorite movie theater (Regal Fairfax Towne Center in Virginia) just got a major overhaul, and we’re totally loving it.  The first good idea a movie theater’s had since the invention of the cup holder: comfortable reclining seats at the push of a button!

My wife last night, relaxing for a showing of “Big Eyes” (wonderful movie):

Download your FREE COPY of Dell Zero

One of the reasons authors make their books free is to gain exposure and pick up readers who otherwise might not branch out past the Bestsellers rack. If you download Dell Zero and read it, I’m sure the author would appreciate an honest review. Reviews help attract readers after the book stops being free.

P.T. Hylton tears the roof off the sucka’

Awesome Indie P.T. Hylton sings about his favorite songs of 2014. I would have posted it anyway, even if he hadn’t mentioned me, because the guy’s a hoot — and he sings and plays so well.  How’s that for a Renaissance guy? Writes, sings, plays the guitar.
