For those writers who wonder if they can mention brand names in their stories, and to what extent, here you go:

The sale is over, time to do some writing

It was fun watching the free sales coming in over the last 2 days, but I need to hunker down and write more.  A kind reader put some wind in my sails, yesterday, when she said she wanted more books out of me.  What can I say?  She’s the boss!

Weasel Word List

I originally set up this blog to be a sort of “writing blog,” but it ended up becoming my “author blog.”  But well, really, I’m just a little, I dunno, well, maybe just a little bit still kinda interested in writing, you know, right?  So here’s a list of “Weael Words” for you to consider cutting or weeding (within reason) from your own writing 🙂

Melissa Jagears also has a lot of cool writing resources, which is how I found her–one of her links was to agent Rachelle Gardner’s site (in my links), which is one of my go-to sites for my daily blog crawl.

See ya, wouldn’t wanna kinda/sorta maybe I dunno, be ya…

I’ve been interviewed by Johanna Rae, author of The Mercenary.

If you’re curious about the man they call John L. Monk, have a look…

Happiest boy in the world alert

So the last 7 days have been sort of great.  Quick breakdown:

  1. I have my first ever author interview coming out this week (I’ll post a link to it that day)
  2. I have a brand new cover, which I’ve already gushed about.
  3. Over the weekend an Amazon Top 500, Vine Voice, Hall of Fame reviewer gave me 5 stars and tweeted/google+/facebooked/blogged my book.
  4. Last week, another Vine Voice reviewer positively reviewed me with 4 stars and will be blogging about me late October.
  5. My latest novel is going through its first round of beta reading.

So, it’s official: I’m now the happiest boy in the world.

The Cast of My Novel!

Carol Ervin’s post, below, is wonderful.  I actually read her book and loved it (disclaimer: she also read my book and reviewed it on Goodreads).

The cast of characters she lays out here are absolutely perfect.  Very clever post.

Have a look:

Thulsa Doom knows

It seems to me that the riddle of steel applies to writing.

We think, “oh we need a better cover” or “website” or some famous person to promote us, but in the end the power isn’t in the tool, it’s the hand that wields it.

Good writing? Hot Fuzz

Ok, the movie’s not exactly new anymore, it came out in 2007.  I hate that it feels like just yesterday, but I guess that’s why I wear glasses now and I’m seeing more gray hair 🙂 Stupid human condition…

So the wife and I were re-watching Hot Fuzz and I couldn’t help remarking, way too many times for Mrs. John L. Monk, that the writing was incredible.  The editing really brought it out, too, with all the scene jumps and sound effects when they happened.  I don’t know what you call it when a comedian says something in the beginning of the routine and brings it up at the end again to great applause, but there was an endless stream of this in the movie, with references to Bad Boys II and Point Break in it that kept coming back to delight us.  And the movie was deeply, brilliantly silly.

Also enjoyed his World’s End movie, though not as much as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.  But it was still a hoot.
