Still choo-chooing along. I actually got closer to 7500, but didn’t want to round up. Waiting for that special moment when it happens and I sense the ending of the first draft. I’ve heard other writers say that’s when their word counts go nuts, and it’s been my experience as well. I’m “writing messy” as Rachael Herron puts it — just getting the story down and never mind how pretty it is. Now I have authors notes scattered everywhere and my spellchecker won’t talk to me.

Sunday Word Count — 7k in 7 Days, and Other News
The first part of the week was spent saying, “Um…this is hard again…it was supposed to get easier after book-2…” and struggling to reach 1k a day. Then around Thursday, I figured out the central conflict of book-3, and the words flowed very easily. I wrote 3k on Friday, 3k on Saturday, which means everything before Friday is sort of embarrassing, huh?
Witness the power of posting your weekly/monthly word counts.
I mean, I just wrote this big fancy thing on how I’d survived writer’s block — how embarrassing if I was stuck with it again, hmm? So I got up every morning, put my butt in the chair and did the best I could…and like most people who occasionally get lucky, I put myself in a position to receive enlightenment.
Other News:
Last night, I finished recording an interview with TJ Redig of Scrivener Soapbox, set to air sometime in December. I spent the week listening to his other podcasts and guess what? They were great. Totally adding him in to my weekly self-pub podcasts. TJ’s a very cool guy and a great interviewer. Very friendly, which reminds me: haven’t you always wondered what happens after the recording ends? Does each side hang up? Do they sing songs and tell knock-knock jokes? Actually, we talked about movies a little, and also about TJ’s own writing. No knock-knock jokes — and you found that out here at john-l-monk.com!

Sunday Word Count — 6,000
Yeah, it’s a Scutt Farkus. It’s been one of those weeks — a great week for everything but writing. I had a Pixel of Ink ad on Friday, a Bookbub yesterday, One Hundred Free Books and a few other sites picked me up, and today I have an Ereader News Today ad going out. As of this blog post, I’m ranked #7 in the kindle store (see previous post, which I’ve updated to as the rank’s improved), and now I see this cool little widget over on the amazon page — some sort of “author ranking” system Amazon is beta testing. Can’t believe I’m #82 (not gonna last, hehe). Click the picture to see the authors:

Sunday Word Count: 7100
I’m of two minds on this week’s word count report. On the one hand, I get to put up Ralphie again, because I beat my thousand words a day minimum. But I’m also a little disappointed because I had plenty of time this week to really pump it out. Ah well, it could have been half that right? Or worse–I could have chucked it all away, like I’d done with a very early draft of Fool’s Ride, chucking away 30k words 🙂 Ugh… That’s the kind of thing that can make you doubt yourself and worry about every little word before it gets written. But what are you gonna do? You’re gonna write, that’s what. And I did — that’s something.

Sunday Word Count (0)
It’s that time again where nobody cares about my blog but me 🙂 Yes, I’ll begin posting my word counts every week, on Sunday, with either a Ralphie if I break 7k words in 7 days, or a Scut Farkus if I don’t. All the editing and post-publication “stuff” is done for Fool’s Ride, and it’s time to keep on keepin’ on. Can’t be a writer if I don’t write, can’t be an author if I don’t auth.
There is no word count for today because I’ve been mostly working out the plot of the next book. However, that still counts as “working on the book” and so my word count this time around is something like “zero.” So here he is, Scut Farkus, in all his yellow-eyed glory:
