Beautiful, heartbreaking, wonderful

No matter how busy I get or what I’m doing, there’s always time for something by Neil Gaiman. Here, he writes about his friend Terry Pratchett’s anger.

Author Wednesday – Carol Ervin

Interview with Carol Ervin (WARNING: very steamy).

P. C. Zick's avatarP.C. ZICK

???????????????????????????????I’m pleased to introduce Carol Ervin to Author Wednesday. Carol’s first two books are a part of a historical fiction series. The Girl on the Mountain and Cold Comfort will be joined by the third in the series, Midwinter Sun, later this month. Today she’s stopped by to talk about her newest endeavor which takes her from historical fiction to science fiction. Dell Zero is the story of a society that uses drugs to control everyone. Dell-Zero - Ebook

Welcome Carol. I’m intrigued that you made the jump into science fiction. Tell us a little bit about Dell Zero and how it’s been received.

Dell Zero is the story of a society that uses drugs to control everyone. The main characters are Dell, a young (un-medicated) woman who has grown up outside the system, and John, an old-timer who is hundreds of years old and unhappy about living forever. One reviewer called…

Just started reading “Demon Frenzy” by Harvey Click — 25% done. It’s…amazing.

You writers out there — ever despair that you’ll never be a good writer like <insert author>?

You readers out there — ever read a book so good you find yourself wishing you could read faster because you can’t wait to see what happens next?

Well I’m both reader and writer, and I’m filled with despair and a desire to read quicker, because Demon Frenzy is absolutely wonderful.  Maybe I’m a sexist jerk, but I tend to read books with male protagonists.  Demon Frenzy has a female protagonist — very well done — and I’m loving every moment of it.

I haven’t said this very well

Here’s your chance to win an incredible dystopian sci-fi book by a wonderful author. It’s one of those books that stays with you, like Dune did for me.

Today I created an event on Goodreads and invited Goodreads friends and some Facebook friends. (Not all–the site kept freezing on my FB invitations). I also posted the invitation on Facebooks, but I didn’t word the invitation very well on either site.

So I’m trying again. The invitation–and you’re included–is to readers of science fiction and/or dystopian novels to read the first chapter of Dell Zero (on this site) any time now through September 29, leave a comment, and thereby become eligible to win a free ebook copy of Dell Zero.

I neglected to say leave a comment at the end of the chapter. That’s where it goes. And if you comment anonymously, consider somehow sending me your email address, including the comment so I’ll know who you are in the event you are the winner. See the “Contact” section of this website.

Here’s the link to read the chapter: http://carolervin.com/welcome/dell-zero/

Ira Levin, a Writing Hero

I love these videos by P.T. Hylton.  In this one, he covers one of his literary heroes, and inspires me to try a new author.

Most of the betas have come back

Authors never really know if what we’ve written is good or bad.  We hope, we suspect, and maybe we think we know, but until someone actually reads the book and tells us, it’s a dice roll.

Three of my wonderful beta readers have come back with the verdict and I’m in positive territory.  Two think the sequel is better than Kick, and one “loved” it but liked Kick a little more.  Considering they all liked Kick, I’m pretty happy.

I’m always amazed at how people appreciate things differently. I have a friend who thinks The Godfather is boring. I like Ben Stiller, but I have friends who can’t stand him. But none of that matters because I’m in positive territory! 🙂

Comrade Cruises, by Carol Kean

Carol Kean is a wonderful woman, and not just because she approves of my typing practice. Ever since meeting her, we’ve kept in touch and exchanged family gossip, book tips, writing ideas, and we’ve read each other’s work. I read an early draft of Comrade Cruises and thought it was great.

Enjoy
—-

The cruise ship was so much bigger than Emmy expected, she couldn’t even think of a word for it. Gargantuan was one, but that sounded like a giant tarantula. Titanic was downright terrifying, for a girl about to set sail.

“Colossal,” she decided, saying it out loud but not too loud. Emmy was learning not to sound smarter than other seven-year-olds. It wasn’t fair to them.

Her foster mother gripped her hand. “You lucky girl, Emmy. Think of the memories you’re about to make!” Leaning toward foster Dad, “FM” (Fake Mom) half-whispered out the side of her mouth, “If this doesn’t make her glad we saved her from those terrible people, nothing will.”

She got that right. Nothing would.

Cover by Victorine

I absolutely love these ebook covers. For historical fiction, they’re the best I’ve ever seen.
