Sunday Word Count: out sick (3k)

(he has yellow eyes!)

(he has yellow eyes!)

What a weird last couple of days.  I thought I had the flu on Friday — weakness, nausea — and found out I had intestinal issues on Saturday. Then I went to the hospital, where they suspected blockage (based on a CT scan) and put me up for the day/night.  I’m fine now, no signs of blockage or what the issue was, just that there was an issue. I got home about 30 minutes ago.

Official word count:

2k for a short story draft I did for my Goodreads group (Proactive Destruction) but didn’t get to submit because I never got to edit it.

1k for my Jenkins Cycle book 3.

A quick thank you to all my reviewers

1378342_1425347107686913_1509716899_n

I come in peace!

The word on the street is it’s not cool for authors to go sending messages to readers on Goodreads and/or Amazon or other online stores. A lot of times, after reading a flattering and/or interesting review, I’ve wanted to reach out but have held back. I’ve wanted to thank readers for reading the book, giving me a chance, picking up the next book, telling their friends, or thank them for whatever it was they wrote in their reviews. However, the last thing I want to do is annoy someone or freak them out by showing up unannounced in their inbox.

But if you’ve come here to see what I have to say, I’m taking the gloves off: thank you all! You rock!

–John

Download your FREE COPY of Dell Zero

One of the reasons authors make their books free is to gain exposure and pick up readers who otherwise might not branch out past the Bestsellers rack. If you download Dell Zero and read it, I’m sure the author would appreciate an honest review. Reviews help attract readers after the book stops being free.

Reblog: Year End Review

What a great list. I should come up with one of my own.

kristinemckinley's avatarK. McKinley's Blog

Chuck Wendig posted a year end review with a list of ten things that you had to pick your absolute favorite of. There could be only one and he made that very clear. I like posting my favorite things, so here is my 2014 year end review:

1) Favorite novel of the year?

Gun to my head I choose Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews. It was a difficult decision and came down to that or Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell or Night Broken by Patricia Briggs. I haven’t yet read Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews or it could have been that.

2) Favorite non-fiction book of the year?

The Sh!t No One Tells You: A Guide to Surviving Your Baby’s First Year by Dawn Dais

I did not read as much non-fiction this year as I should have. I’ve got a stack of non-fiction I keep meaning to…

Here is my interview with John L. Monk

An interview I had at Authors Interviews. If you’re curious about the salacious details, have a look 🙂

Name: John L. Monk

Age: 43

Where are you from: Virginia

A little about your self `ie your education Family life etc:

I’m the oldest of two, with a younger sister. I barely graduated high school, then went to college and made the Dean’s List every year. I can’t do anything unless I’m interested in it, have a dog in the race, etc. Anthropology was a good major for a guy like me—interesting and just about useless at the same time. It gave me the veneer of intelligence without the threat of anyone expecting much from me. Thank goodness I had computer skills to fall back on.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news?

Well, my first book “Kick” is now permafree – meaning I’m giving it away to one and all for the bargain price of nothin’.  And I’m loving it. I get anywhere from 50-100 downloads a day, on…

Repost: Interview with Tom Covenent

Cool author interview site I found.

fionamcvie1964's avatarauthorsinterviews

Name Tom Covenent

Age 55

Where are you from

London, England

A little about yourself `ie your education Family life etc

I’m an Englishman, born and bred. My parents were divorced when I was a youngster and I spent a few years living between the two of them as they tried to build new lives from the devastated landscape of their marriage! I have several siblings but don’t have anything much to do with them as we were spread far and wide.

I left formal education as soon as I was allowed and got myself a job. My employer sent me to college where I learned about computers and technology at a time when nobody had a computer. I learned to get drunk and have fun, going to rock concerts (I saw Frank Zappa live!).

Basically I enjoyed the pleasures of life as often and as much as I could…eventually…

Simon Whistler: How to find your People

I’m a huge fan of Simon Whistler and his Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast. So it’s fun to see what he has to say when he’s not asking other people what THEY have to say.

[Editor’s note: Today we welcome Simon Whistler of Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast fame. He’s got a nifty and useful mastermind group going, too. Don’t miss checking that out at the end of his post to leverage the power of podcasting for greater success for authors! ~ Chazz]

Eighteen months ago I started a little side project. A podcast called Rocking Self-Publishing.

Eighteen months later, I’ve talked to over 80 authors, for around 100 hours of interviews. I’ve reached thousands of people though 600,000 podcast downloads. I’ve emailed, Skyped, and met, with a number of people I admire. I’ve even started a small online community for successful and hungry authors; the group of people that I hope my podcast resonates the most with.

When Chazz asked me to come and do a guest post for his fantastic blog, I knew I didn’t need to write an article, I needed to answer a…

The Bad Box by Harvey Click

I knew him when… A masterpiece.

The better the book, the harder it is for me to review.  This one is making me work extra      hard. Buy it here for $2.99 and the adrenalin rush will far outlast the price of a coffee.

QUICK SYNOPSIS: Sarah Temple leaves her abusive boyfriend and moves into an apartment complex in the worst part of town, where her neighbors include a tough little one-hundred-year-old woman who packs a pistol, a quiet ghost of a man, and a mysterious woman of the evening who hasn’t quite mastered high heels on stairs.  Men come to visit the sexy blonde upstairs, but like the roaches in that pesticide commercial, they don’t always check out. When Sarah finds out why, she has to move again. Not only her ex-boyfriend but now a sick, sick, sick serial killer are out to get her. Worse, a mysterious Solitary One controls both stalkers. He’s “a living darkness, a…

Indie Authors: Where Are They Now? (Part 5)

After reading this, you will become subsnoofilated with the power of ‘Infinite Lameness’….oooom…..ooom…. (ooom (….))

Carol Ervin's avatarCarol Ervin, Author of the Mountain Women Series

If not for my decision to read all the books in John L Monk’s awesome indies project, I would never have read page one of Dan’s Lame Novel . Especially not with its plain lame cover. I mean, we’ve all read enough lame stuff. We should subject ourselves to something deliberately lame?

Yes. If laughing improves your day. lame-novel-ecover

I have so many things to say about this work that I don’t know where to begin. Does the writer break all the rules or uphold them? Both, if you look sideways. For example, almost every chapter starts with the weather and the location of the character, an aid to readers in case it’s been a while since we set the book aside. Now I kind of like that technique in a novel–it keeps me on track. But since his intentions are lame, Rinnert goes over the edge, describing his own weather and what he has been doing between chapters, and…

Being Interviewed Is An Honor To Me

I literally just got done with a podcast interview (which I’ll promote when he sends me the info). My first audio interview ever, and I admit I was kind of nervous. I tried not to let it show. Can’t believe Armand has done so many though — wow, incredible.

I’ve been asked many, many times to be interviewed over the last 3 or so years, and I get excited every time. Whether it is an e-mail interview, podcast interview via Skype or in person, it is usually enjoyable. It is definitely helping me to reach new potential readers, too…

I’ve lost count of the interviews I’ve done and I’m way too lazy to go back and figure out a number. I know it is between 1 and 987 (I don’t believe I’ve done 988 or more). I know they’ve all been fun. Hell, even the interviews that were boring are fun because it let me see what not to do when I was interviewing someone, so each time it is a learning experience.

I’m hoping to do more interviews soon, because January 1st 2015 the new year of Authors Supporting Our Troops officially begins. I want to create more…
