Indie Authors: Where Are They Now? (Part One)

Hey there — an Awesome Indie update from an Awesome Indie!

Carol Ervin's avatarCarol Ervin, Author of the Mountain Women Series

The explosion of self-published books makes me think every third reader has just been waiting for a chance to be a writer. And guess what, people are buying and enjoying self-published books. It’s true.

I won’t review or contest all the moaning and groaning from the media about this phenomenon, though I’ll admit that having a desire to write and a good story to tell doesn’t always end in a well-written, properly formatted book. But: freedom to publish. Who can argue with that? Oh, that’s right, people with money to lose: publishers and agents.

Indie ebooks are cheap because authors can set their own price and earn up to 70 percent royalty from Amazon.

Some critics complain as though the rabble has been set loose. I heard a traditionally-published author protest that cheap ebooks threaten the industry, and without the guidance of editors and publishers, literature will decline. Well, la di da. In my humble opinion, very little…

Go ahead and take the bait!

Free today, but wanted to also say: wow…talk about a great cover, huh? Makes me wanna slap my momma.

Steve Vernon's avatarYOURS IN STORYTELLING...

Okay – so my short novel TROLLING LURES is available for free today and tomorrow.

Check out the cover from talented cover artist KEITH DRAWS. Check out the cover from talented cover artist KEITH DRAWS.

Trolling Lures asks and answers just what exactly would happen if the Trickster Coyote of native mythology ran into a Norse Troll, fresh out of Asgard.

Here’s what some folks are saying about TROLLING LURES.

“Trolling Lures is a campfire tale on speed, a heady cocktail of remorse, discovery and the quest for redemption, couched in equal parts bedtime story and fever dream. It is surrealism personified, and if you’re into that sort of thing, Vernon has a treat for you.” – Dark Scribe Magazine

“Steve Vernon manages to wrap up about six varieties of weird in this story. You’ve got a talking trickster god who likes to switch between being a coyote and a Mountie along with a couple of ghosts getting it on…

Traitors Finally Brought to Book

Very interesting looking. IRA, spies, intrigue, what’s not to like? I’m a big fan of Lawlor’s history blog, but I have to admit it makes me want to read the first book:

I know this is historywithatwist, but in my own small way I’m making a little history of my own. This is a big day for me. My third Liam Mannion novel, A Time of Traitors, is now live on Amazon. It has taken me almost nine months to write. That’s longer than I spent on either Tan or The Golden Grave, but then I didn’t have as many issues with those books.

At first, I was very clear on what course to take. I had a good, strong opening scene. Shortly after that I wrote another strong scene that was a potential opener. And, eh, then I wrote another one. It was like waiting for a bus to come along only for three to arrive together. I was spoiled for choice.

I scratched my head for a while and then realised that the only way I would…

The End of a Series

I read the first book in this series, and now the last book of 3 is out. Wow, what a ride. Carol Ervin is truly an “awesome indie.” What beautiful covers, and her writing is incredible. Looking forward to “Midwinter Sun”.

Carol Ervin's avatarCarol Ervin, Author of the Mountain Women Series

Readers who loved May Rose’s story will be happy to discover her new adventures in the final story of the Mountain Women Series. It’s Midwinter Sun: A Love Story. The characters are older (and wiser, a condition which always happens, we hope). They’ve returned to Winkler, West Virginia, where everything has changed.Midwinter-Sun.300x450

I’ll put a sample chapter on this site soon. The print version should be available later next week.

Meanwhile, you should be able to sample chapters on Amazon.

Thanks for taking a look. 🙂

Author Wednesday – Carol Ervin

Interview with Carol Ervin (WARNING: very steamy).

P. C. Zick's avatarP.C. ZICK

???????????????????????????????I’m pleased to introduce Carol Ervin to Author Wednesday. Carol’s first two books are a part of a historical fiction series. The Girl on the Mountain and Cold Comfort will be joined by the third in the series, Midwinter Sun, later this month. Today she’s stopped by to talk about her newest endeavor which takes her from historical fiction to science fiction. Dell Zero is the story of a society that uses drugs to control everyone. Dell-Zero - Ebook

Welcome Carol. I’m intrigued that you made the jump into science fiction. Tell us a little bit about Dell Zero and how it’s been received.

Dell Zero is the story of a society that uses drugs to control everyone. The main characters are Dell, a young (un-medicated) woman who has grown up outside the system, and John, an old-timer who is hundreds of years old and unhappy about living forever. One reviewer called…

I haven’t said this very well

Here’s your chance to win an incredible dystopian sci-fi book by a wonderful author. It’s one of those books that stays with you, like Dune did for me.

Carol Ervin's avatarCarol Ervin, Author of the Mountain Women Series

Today I created an event on Goodreads and invited Goodreads friends and some Facebook friends. (Not all–the site kept freezing on my FB invitations). I also posted the invitation on Facebooks, but I didn’t word the invitation very well on either site.

So I’m trying again. The invitation–and you’re included–is to readers of science fiction and/or dystopian novels to read the first chapter of Dell Zero (on this site) any time now through September 29, leave a comment, and thereby become eligible to win a free ebook copy of Dell Zero.

I neglected to say leave a comment at the end of the chapter. That’s where it goes. And if you comment anonymously, consider somehow sending me your email address, including the comment so I’ll know who you are in the event you are the winner. See the “Contact” section of this website.

Here’s the link to read the chapter: http://carolervin.com/welcome/dell-zero/

Cover by Victorine

I absolutely love these ebook covers. For historical fiction, they’re the best I’ve ever seen.

Rocking Self Publishing Podcast Episode 63: Quadruple Your Kindle Sales with Nick Stephenson

Attention author friends. If you can only listen to one podcast episode about self-publishing, this would be the episode.

*Update: forgot the link* –> http://rockingselfpublishing.com/

It covers:

1) keywords — heavily, exhaustively (around the 50% mark in the podcast)

2) how he broke the cycle of sales bumps after promos (followed by declines).

3) mailing lists, how to deal with them smartly

4) permafree a little bit, but nothing he’s done relies on permafree

5) websites/blogs

August Numbers

One author’s outlook on sales (funny)…

kristinemckinley's avatarK. McKinley's Blog

Number of Books Sold:                    1

Number of Free Downloads:           83

August was a disappointing month. I just had one sale. My second book was purchased but they didn’t go through and buy the rest. This has only happened twice before. Sometimes it takes weeks but they always go back and buy the next in the series. The person that bought the second one probably died. That’s really the only possible reason the rest of the books weren’t purchased.

My Free downloads weren’t as much as last month but they were more than June, so I’m fine with them. I had a few days where I had several downloaded in a day. But then I had a few days where I had none downloaded. The graph looks like a roller coaster ride.

Monthly Word Count Goal:           7350

Words Written:                                 6288

Books Read:                                      22

As you can…
